When I first moved to Israel seven months ago, I brought along a home grain mill on my lift for some of my friends. They live in Yavniel, a beautiful place near Lake Tiberious.
They had a local farmer friend who grew his own grain. My friends bought a ton, and ground fresh home milled grain from it with the mill I brought.
In exchange for my bringing the mill on the lift, my friends supplied me with freshly ground whole grain from Israel for a few weeks (until they ran out). My wife made challah from it - it took a few times to get the recipe right, but OH MY GOD was this good.
Up till this point, I hated whole wheat bread. Wheat challah. . . never. Yuck. No taste.
Now I have discovered this is because store bought "100% whole wheat" isn't really 100% - more like 95% - missing the key and most important nutritional components.
For a religious person, there really is nothing like it - freshly baked whole wheat bread made from whole ground grain grown in Eretz-Yisrael!!
Now I can really make a blessing on my "Bread From The Land"!
